Show & Share - Proverbs - Choose God's Commands
Today I learned that I can choose to keep God’s commands.
My son, if you accept my words and store up my commands within you, listening closely to wisdom and directing your heart to understanding; furthermore, if you call out to insight and lift your voice to understanding, if you seek it like silver and search for it like hidden treasure, then you will understand the fear of the Lord and discover the knowledge of God. For the Lord gives wisdom; from his mouth come knowledge and understanding.
Proverbs 2: 1-6 (CSB)
As a continuation of our Youth Ministry teaching series on Proverbs, we learned that we can choose to keep God’s commands. We first learned what the words commands and commandments mean and talked about examples of them in schools, sports, games, governments, and homes. We discussed how hard it would be to learn in a classroom without rules, to play a game without them, to live in a country without them, and to live in a home without them.
We then learned about the greatest commands—those given by God in His word (of which there are hundreds!). We reviewed the 10 commandments in Exodus 20 and Jesus’ answer to the Pharisee who asked which command in the law is greatest in Matthew 22:36-40. We learned that God gave us the law to show us how to be holy, the difference between holiness and sinfulness, and that it was impossible for us to keep all of them; we need a savior—Jesus Christ, who chose to and was able to keep all of God’s commands. And that when we proclaim him as our Lord and Savior and follow him, then we receive Spirit which will help us to keep God’s commands. But just as God didn’t make Jesus keep them, we too get to choose whether we want to keep them or not. Then we looked at Proverbs 2:1-6 to see what happens when we choose to keep God’s commands: we will understand who God is and appreciate who He is, discover the knowledge of God, and receive wisdom, knowledge, and understanding from Him. After all, God created us to keep His commandments (Ecc 12:13).
