Today I learned that the fear of the Lord God is the key to wisdom and understanding.

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, And the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.

Proverbs 9:10 (NASB)

As a continuation of our Youth Ministry teaching series on Proverbs, we learned that to fear God means to know and understand who God really is—the Holy One—and to know Him, His heart, and His character: that He is holy, just, righteous, good, pure, love, mighty, merciful, and full of grace. To fear God is to honor Him as the one and only God, to stand in awe and wonder at His greatness, to trust Him, and to obey Him. Before we can have knowledge and wisdom from God, we must fear Him and be humble. (Proverbs 15:33) You can’t understand a story if you start in the middle; you must start at the beginning. Similarly, you can’t build a house roof down; you must start with the foundation. This is how it is with wisdom and understanding; you must begin with fearing God. And fools who refuse to fear God show that they hate true wisdom. (Proverbs 1:7)

We also looked at Proverbs 2:1-6 and learned that we are to treasure wisdom from God and talked about how they can fear God: listen closely when God’s word is taught, ask their parents questions about God’s word, read the Bible or ask someone to read it to you, and sing songs about God.
