Today I learned that the Kingdom of Heaven is like a mustard seed and leaven.

[Jesus] put another parable before them, saying, “The kingdom of heaven is like a grain of mustard seed that a man took and sowed in his field. It is the smallest of all seeds, but when it has grown it is larger than all the garden plants and becomes a tree, so that the birds of the air come and make nests in its branches.”

[Jesus] told them another parable. “The kingdom of heaven is like leaven that a woman took and hid in three measures of flour, till it was all leavened.”

As a continuation of our Youth Ministry teaching series, The Teachings of Jesus Christ, we learned about 2 parables that Jesus used to teach about the kingdom of heaven—the mustard seed and the leaven. We got to see how tiny a mustard seed is and how underneath the soil a seed starts to change so that it can become a tree. We also got to see how adding a very small amount of yeast (a type of leaven) to flour and a couple other ingredients changes those ingredients and makes the dough rise; how without a leaven, bread is flat. We talked about how just like the mustard seed and leaven, the kingdom of heaven (God’s family and those who accept Jesus as their Lord and Savior) started “small” with 12 disciples and has grown very big since then by sharing the good news with everyone everywhere. We also learned how, like yeast changes the other ingredients it comes into contact with inside the dough, being a citizen of heaven transforms our hearts and helps us change the world by being lights and love through the power of the holy spirit.
