Show & Share - Jesus is the light of the world

Today I learned that Jesus Christ is the light of the world.

“Jesus spoke to the people again, saying, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me won’t walk in darkness but will have the light of life.” John 8:12

We discussed how the world became dark after Adam and Eve sinned, but that God sent a savior, Jesus Christ, as the light of the world (John 8:12).  We discussed that this darkness and light is spiritual!  We looked at some of the characteristics of both darkness (selfishness, hatred, death, separation from God) and light (love, selflessness, goodness, life, close to God).  

We then watched a video recording of Jesus healing the blind man in John 9.  We discussed that just like the blind man could not see, our hearts are darkened and blind, but when we believe on Jesus Christ our heart’s eyes are opened like the blind man who can now see! (2 Cor 4:3-6)  We also talked about the Pharisees and how some people hate the light and want to hold onto darkness so they can keep doing their evil ways- they are actually blind!  (John 3:19-21).

We ended by talking about how we are now lights in the world because Jesus Christ lives in us!  We want to shine and “use the flashlight” that we have in Christ to guide our way and bring others to Christ. (Matt 5:16; Eph 5:8-14)

For you are all children of light, children of the day. We are not of the night or of the darkness. 1 Thes 5:11

Family Activity: 

• Set up a scavenger hunt in a dark room and see if your kids can complete it.  Then give them a flashlight to use!  Remind them that God’s Word and Jesus Christ are the lights that guide us in this life!
• Brainstorm practical ways that you can shine as a light as a family!
