Today I learned: I can obey God’s ways, instead of obeying my feelings
Last week in Proverbs we looked at how wise people hold back their feelings from flowing out of them without control (Prov 29:11). Are your toddlers ever full of emotion, throwing a tantrum etc? Well today we talked about self-control and saw in Proverbs 25:28 A man without self-control is like a city broken into and left without walls. When we don’t have self control we’re letting our heart be like a city that has been broken into and disgraced by an enemy. So what can we encourage our kids when they are full of emotion, throwing a tantrum etc? We can encourage them that they can still choose the path of wisdom instead of obeying their feelings and going on the foolish path. In their emotions… “be careful! Having emotion is not foolish itself, but don’t let how you feel make you act foolishly or speak foolishly.” Say “help me God!” when you are feeling emotional. And Eph 4:26 “In your anger do not sin” : Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry. This is self-control! I tell my kids (and myself for that matter) that when they’re emotional they have to be extra careful of their actions and words. Thanks be to God that this is a fruit of the spirit. In Christ we have a choice to obey God instead of sin!
